A house steeped in history - the apartment hotel on Riemergasse
The first documented mention of the property or the then building at Riemergasse 8 dates back to 1457, and over the centuries the property has had a varied history.
Sales, transfers and legacies - the list of owners is long. In 1714 it finally came to the widowed princess of Esterházy. As Palais Esterházy it remained in the family for a long time until it was acquired by public auction in 1816 by Eleonore Princess Liechtenstein.
After numerous other changes of ownership, the building was demolished in 1903. In the same year the new construction began. The present five-storey high house was built on a reduced floor space. In the hallway to the left of the entrance you can still see the red marble plaque.
The aforementioned Alois Schuhmacher was one of the most important architects of the Ringstrasse era. He built more than 300 buildings, especially for the public sector, such as the Gasometer, the Dorotheum, the water tower in Favoriten and many more.
The Otto family acquired this historic building in 1970. Only four years later it was opened as a bed and breakfast with 10 apartments. In 2007 a major renovation phase was carried out, which included all existing apartments. Almost two years later the lift was renovated in style. Impressive detail on the edge: it was possible to preserve the original cabin from the turn of the century!
In 2010, further apartments on the second floor were added. In 2012 the 18 apartments were renovated. In addition to equipping them with new furniture and modernising all kitchens, this renovation was also guided by the principle of sustainability. The hot water supply is now provided by a solar system on the roof. The studios on the 5th floor have air conditioning. All other apartments have their own air conditioning units.
In 2019 the hotel was closed for 3 months. During this time important work was carried out to comply with the safety regulations in the hotel industry. Not visible but important, the electrical wiring, the fire alarm system and the escape route lighting were brought up to date. The staircase was also given a new lighting concept and now shines in new splendour. In addition, the W-LAN system was renewed and expanded throughout the building.
Last but not least the reconstruction phase was used to create 2 new apartments. This has increased the number of studios and suites in the APPARTEMENT-HOTEL AN DER RIEMERGASSE to 20.
